Back Up Generators

While several public schools are emergency shelters, only a few schools designated as primary or alternate shelters have adequate back-up generators. If power went out, the shelters would be without telephones, heat or air conditioning. In the FY 2007 budget, Denbigh and Warwick High Schools that are emergency shelters were allotted money to install generators. Warwick project is completed with Denbigh still on the list to receive a generator.  In addition, other schools were provided funds to install generator hook-ups that could be utilized during an emergency event.  Schools that are shelters will be better prepared to meet conditions and needs if a disaster were to happen.  Generators are necessary during wide spread power outages to run traffic signals, sewage pump stations, and key public buildings. Since Hurricane Isabel, the City has required new gas stations to have back up generators to avoid gasoline shortages.
