Newport News is defined by its superb waterfront parks, its stately, landscaped thoroughfares and the lush, green stream corridors that meander through the City, lined with trails and giving definition and beauty to the surrounding neighborhoods.  Newport News Park is a regional attraction of national renown, a haven for wildlife and a refuge for residents of the City.  Schoolyards are resplendent with trees, shaded seating areas and a rich variety of play fields and equipment. Neighborhood parks and schools are located within a half mile of every residence in the City.  Community recreation centers, located throughout the City, provide year-round recreation and instructional programs.  Private citizens and civic groups donate time and materials to keep their parks and thoroughfares well maintained and up-to-date, as well as assist in park resource conservation and the implementation of recreation programs.  Annual recognition ceremonies honor these volunteers. The Newport News Green Foundation assists the City's open space preservation program through land acquisition and conservation.
