2030 Vision Statement

Newport News has an efficient and balanced transportation system. The street system is complemented by bus service, high speed rail, commuter rail service and light rail transit within the City.  Hampton Roads Transit’s bus routes provide frequent service taking passengers between their homes and work, to transit stations, and other destinations. Bus service includes route deviation providing bus service into neighborhoods and shuttle buses in commercial areas. Bikeways allow people to ride their bicycles to work or for recreation.  Sidewalks exist on all major streets and in most residential streets. Transportation centers located downtown and near the Airport, allow passengers to transfer between buses, light rail transit, high-speed rail and air carriers.  The Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport is a commercial airport providing both international flights and direct flights to destinations throughout the United States. A ferry takes passengers from downtown Newport News to the Naval Station before continuing on to downtown Norfolk.

The layout of City streets minimizes cut-through traffic.  The City's engineering design standards and traffic calming program discourage speeding in neighborhoods while moving traffic safely.  Major arterial streets are located on the perimeter of neighborhoods, and have landscaped buffers to reduce traffic noise in residential areas and improve the appearance of the streets.

Because of the regional nature of transportation, Newport News develops long-term transportation solutions through regional cooperation and planning with the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Planning Organization, Hampton Roads Transit and other regional authorities.
