Economic Development Issues

Achieving a bright economic future takes community involvement. It means facing issues, planning and carrying out those plans. As a community, there are several issues we must address if we are to reach our economic potential. These issues involve:

  • Maintaining and improving quality of life in all areas of the City;
  • Improving education and training to meet the employment needs of the future, including life-long access to learning opportunities;
  • Reducing socio-economic disparities in the City, and raising income levels;
  • Using redevelopment to improve the tax base and increase economic diversification;
  • Developing in a way that enhances our tax base and maintains the City's fiscal health, while maintaining a quality of life;
  • Using the City’s remaining vacant land wisely for their highest and best use;
  • Developing key publicly-owned sites; and,
  • Providing transportation capacity in streets, public transit, rail and rapid transit to accommodate economic growth.
