Police Visibility in Neighborhoods
There are 12 Police beats and three precincts in the City, as shown on Map 8-1. The North Precinct Station is headquartered in Denbigh on DeShazor Drive. The Central Precinct is headquartered at 611 Dresden Drive. The South Precinct now is headquartered in the Coates and Clark Building at 5839 Jefferson Avenue. A new South Precinct location is in future plans for the Department.
The Police Department moved into its new headquarters building in November 2006. This state-of-the-art, three-story facility is located at 9710 Jefferson Avenue. There is a separate annex building for the Forensics and Property and Evidence Units. The new building has multiple conference and training rooms, which allows for improved communication with the community.
The Department has a sub-station in the HRT Transfer Terminal downtown on Jefferson Avenue in the Southeast Community. The sub-station increases police visibility and makes policing more neighborhood-based. Police officers may take home their marked vehicles, increasing police visibility throughout the community. The Community Education and Outreach Center opened in July 2005 at 10188 Warwick Boulevard in the restored Amoco Gas Station in historic Hilton Village. Plans are to add a classroom and meeting space for both the Police and community. Police Department volunteers run this facility, making it the only one of its kind in the United States.
