Areas of Historical Distinction

Newport News' historic character Is important for economic and tourist development efforts.  The citizens of Newport News have stated that, in cooperation with other interested community organizations, the City should actively support the conservation and use of landmark structures and sites of architectural or historical interest.

In the past, the City lost many of the historic structures that once lined its streets, but preservation efforts have resulted in the Hilton Village Historic District, North End/ Huntington Heights Historic District, the Newsome House, and Lee Hall Depot.  Many of the City's old plantation homes were lost during the Civil War or from the development of Warwick County. Only four pre-1865 structures remain: Cedar Grove, Matthew Jones House, Endview Plantation and Lee Hall Mansion.

Development must be sensitive to the historical significance and cultural landscape of nationally recognized historic buildings. Development near Lee Hall Mansion and Endview Plantation and other historic sites should enhance these visitor attractions with architecture and businesses which blend the past with the future to create a unique environment.
