Virginia Landmarks Register

The Virginia Landmark Register was created in 1966 by the Virginia General Assembly.  In Virginia, properties are generally nominated to both State and National Registers.  The principal purpose of the State Register, same as the National Register, is recognition and public awareness.  Register designation also provides financial benefits to owners of registered properties, creates a permanent record of historic resources and requires mitigation of negative impacts of government funded projects.  The criteria for the State Register are essentially the same as for the National Register; however, an owner's consent is not required.

Register status, State or National, does not restrict the use of the property as long as private, non-federal funds are used.  The owner is not prohibited from altering or demolishing the building or subdividing the property.

The same benefits stated under the National Register apply to Virginia Landmark Status properties, but grants and tax credits are available from the state and federal governments.
