Green Building
“A green building, also known as a sustainable building, is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner. Green buildings are designed to meet certain objectives such as; protecting occupant health; improving employee productivity; using energy, water and other resources more efficiently; and reducing the overall impact to the environment.” (38)
Some elements of green building include:
- Siting the building near mass transit and preserving natural features and exiting landscaping;
- Energy, materials and water efficiencies;
- Choosing construction and interior finish materials with zero or low emissions to improve indoor air quality; and
- Proper operation and maintenance so that the building continues to perform as designed.
Goals, Policy and Strategies and Implementation for green building are found in the Land Use Chapter (Goal 3, Policy 3.1, Strategy 3.1.5 and Implementation 3.13).
