Neighborhoods

Planning District II has many neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character.  One of these is historic Hilton Village.  Since its development in 1918, Hilton Village has matured into a closely knit and unique community.  This was formally recognized by its designation as an historic district in 1969. Hilton Village contains all the elements of a traditional neighborhood having residential uses, retail, office, and service commercial combined with community facilities such as a school, park, churches, and main library.

The District has other older neighborhoods which were once in Warwick County, and many had streets laid out on a grid iron pattern, e.g., Rivermont, Brandon Heights, North Hilton, North Newport News and Newmarket.  Later subdivisions have meandering curvilinear and cul-de-sacs streets such as Beaconsdale, Green Oaks, Kiln Creek, Barclay, and Village Green.  Large homes on expansive lots describe the older well-established neighborhoods of Riverside, Blunt Point and Deep Creek.

Many established older neighborhoods interconnect with internal streets.  These neighborhoods include Cedar Grove, Ivy Farms, Robinson, Deerfield, Morrison, Bayberry, ChapelPark, Wendwood, Gatewood and Glendale. These areas are distinguished by their quiet, tree-lined streets and easy access to shopping and recreation. Other neighborhoods provide exclusive access via one collector road. These neighborhoods include DutchVillage, Swansea Manor, Deer Park, Maxwell, Sluice Mill, and Scufflefield.

Planned residential communities, such as the Villages of Kiln Creek, combine different housing types to create neighborhoods which offer a variety of housing, including condominiums, townhouses, and detached single family. Kiln Creek provides critical elements of a neighborhood including residential, service oriented commercial, educational and recreational facilities.   Port Warwick, with its neo-traditional development, combines all the aspects of a mixed neighborhood to include single family detached and attached, condominiums, apartment, office, retail shops, and health services.  Bernard Village of Oyster Point is another example of a mixture of residential types, e.g., condominiums, townhouses and detached single family units, office and service commercial.
